Listening to some PGA Tour Radio on SiriusXM just now, I was surprised to hear Michael Breed talk about the USA Ryder Cup team and the captains picks that Jim Furyk will be taking.
The top 8 players in the USA Ryder Cup standings make the team automatically, combined with 4 captains picks making up the team of 12.
According to Breed and a source he claims to have, Captain Furyk is leaning towards the 4 captains picks of (10) Phil Mickelson, (12) Matt Kuchar, (18) Zach Johnson, and (20) Tiger Woods.
This leaves guys like (9) Bryson DeChambeau, (11) Xander Shauffele, (13) Kevin Kisner, (14) Tony Finau and (16) Kevin Na off the team. All guys who are having a great year.
That being said, experience is key at the Ryder Cup and those 4 potential picks by Furyk all have that.
That being said, Zach Johnson hasn’t had the best of years. He is without a top 10 this year which could make him a questionable pick, especially at 18. Someone like Dechambeau who has won and has 7 top 10’s this season while ranked 9th, perhaps could be more deserving, or someone like Schauffele.
The next hot topic is Tiger Woods. Tiger getting picked to play as an assistant captain is something that some people, and players, may be upset about, but here’s the thing, the Ryder Cup just isn’t the same without him. His leadership and experience is huge when it comes to an event like this. He’s an asset to this team on the course and in the locker room. Tiger has gotten himself to 20th in the standings in just 7 months. Ryder cup points are earned over the last 2 years, so for him to get to 20th, is spectacular. It’s hard to overlook someone like Woods. He’s played with Furyk on Ryder Cup teams, along with Kuchar and Mickelson. He can help these younger players on the team, and he can putt, which is something you need to do in the Ryder Cup. Not to mention the other aspect, Tiger moves the needle when it comes to ratings. Scratch that, Tiger IS the needle. The Open Championship, in a time where TV consumption overall is down, just had the highest ratings in 18 years.
Personally, I want the most fiery players on the team. I want guys that make putts and go bananas banging their chest. Unpopular opinion, I wouldn’t mind seeing 12 Patrick Reeds go up against 12 Ian Poulters. I need that, I need intensity like you read about. I need Tiger and Phil playing together and gambling in their own match while doing so. I want pit bulls playing for the USA.
Here is the rest of the US team, players 1-8 are locks based on these standings:
