With the Ryder Cup just a few weeks away, the captains have the monumental task of selecting 4 players that have earned a pick onto the team. Well that time has finally come.
The U.S. squad has sort of taken shape over the past couple of months and perhaps the play of these players made the decision of captain Jim Furyk that much easier. With that, captain Furyk has selected the following players as his captains picks: Bryson DeChambeau, Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods.
DeChambeau, Mickelson and Woods join the other 8 players that qualified for this year’s match via the point system: Brooks Koepka, Dustin Johnson, Justin Thomas, Patrick Reed, Bubba Watson, Jordan Spieth, Rickie Fowler and Webb Simpson. This team is electric, absolute electric.
Some people think that DeChambeau didn’t have the mental toughness to be a Ryder Cup selection, but I freaking love this guy on the U.S. squad. He’s just enough psycho for me and just the person I want opposite someone like Ian Poulter battling it out for their country. This guy lives and breathes golf, love him or hate him, he’s a nut job, and he’s our nut job. Embrace him, for just one week. Bryson’s Ryder Cup Record: Rookie
Tiger was a complete no brainer. Woods hasn’t played on a Ryder Cup team since 2012, so it’ll be nice to see him back out there playing for his country. He has more than enough earned a spot. His Ryder Cup record hasn’t been stellar over the years, but he is someone you want on your sideline when it comes to teammates. Woods’ play in 2018 has been solid, and deserving of a pick. Any time your team has Tiger Woods as a captains pick, things are looking very good for you. Tiger’s Ryder Cup Record: 13-17-3
Phil is Phil and another pick that I love. Although his play of late has been inconsistent, he has showed flashes of brilliance this season which includes a win in the WGC event in Mexico earlier in 2018. Phil’s Ryder Cup Record: 18-20-7
Furyk will announce the 12th and final roster spot for the U.S. Ryder Cup team after the BMW Championship on Sept. 9. With Woods stepping aside as vice captain, Furyk has named David Duval, Matt Kuchar and Zach Johnson vice captains.
The U.S. squad on paper is one of the most talented squads in recent past and will give the Americans a great chance of defending their crown from 2016 and also pick up their first win on European soil since 1993.
Here’s a look at the U.S. team uniform for the entire week at the Ryder Cup:
Nowhere near as legendary as these bad boys
But they’ll do.
Meanwhile, Europe’s captain selections will come tomorrow with their eight automatic qualifiers being: Francesco Molinari, Justin Rose, Tyrrell Hatton, Tommy Fleetwood, Jon Rahm, Rory McIlroy, Alex Noren and Thorbjørn Olesen. If Ian Poulter isn’t somehow selected, it’s looking like Tyrrell Hatton will fill the spot of most punch-able face.
